Yoga Injuries: How Often Do They Happen? What Do We Need to Know?

by Alison Kavanaugh, Physiotherapy Student from Dalhousie University

"For yoga teachers and students this means approaching the practice with a sense of balance - using yoga for all its benefits while maintaining caution when executing more advanced poses."

108 Days Reflections. Happy Mothers Day.

It has been three weeks since the end of the 108 Days of Yoga challenge and I have reflected on the results of actually engaging in the practice relative to my own personal intentions with this practice at the beginning.

108 Days of Yoga - Day 107

Beads 107. April 17th, 2013.

Practiced meditation sadhana for one hour in the morning. My plans to attend class were foiled by an appointment that came up. I managed to find 45 minutes free in the studio to practice asana. I listened to Guster and included two variations of side crow in my practice. This was  a day where the scheduling hiccup could have deterred me from practice for the day. 108 days has cured me of that habit!

Namaste all, Mike.

108 Days of Yoga - Days 105-106

Beads 105-106. April 15-16th, 2013.

I have been sitting every morning and going to yoga each day, with Maxine's noon class on Monday and Jolene's 11 am class today. Carried by the momentum of practice, I notice that there is little resistance. The resistance I have had over the past number of years due to a meandering journey through traumatice grief is falling away. Two more days of this blog left and I am contemplating how I will continue from here. I have decided two things:

Studying the 7th volume of The Collected Works of Chogyam Trungpa Rinpoche again. Interestingly, it looks like I will finish this volume in the next few days. I sat yesterday and studied. Today I am doing the same and will practice some asana after I finish this post.

The candles on my meditation shrine that I lit at the beginning of the 108 days are done and need to be replaced. Today as I sit and read snow flakes are falling outside my window and I am reading "The Song of the Snowy Ranges" by Milarepa (excerpt).

Double dose today with Leslie and Tomomi. Great vibes, great music, with Les leading us into side crow and Tomomi helping me sort out my pigeon pose. Lots of love in the room today, as ususal. Namaste, Mike.

108 Days of Yoga - Days 100 & 101

Beads 100 & 101. April 9th, 2013.

After six days of asana classes in a row I am practicing meditation for a couple of days and intentionally letting my body rest and glue itself back together a bit. Will resume with class tomorrow morning at 11:00 am. Life and work is particularly busy right now yet the difference with the practice we are doing is that the busy time is not throwing me off regular practice. Namaste, Mike.

108 Days of Yoga - Day 99

Bead 99. April 9th, 2013.

Jolene was back from vacation and putting on a fine class of overall gooooood yoga today at 11 am. Loved it. Later I went to the gym and was running laps at the Canada Games Centre and could hear our 500 hour student Denetta teaching an exercise class below the track yelling over the microphone "Breathe IN, Breathe Out". That was helpful. Namaste, Mike.

I attended Maxine's bootcamp class today. Arms, abs and inversions. Whew. Good thing I had my granola this morning, holy cow. Tomorrow I plan to hit Jo's 11 power hour. Anyone want to join? Namaste, Mike.
